On a recent episode of Choppin It with Bhuda T, South African artist Flvme gave insight into his creative process behind his latest album, particularly focusing on the track ‘Habibi’ and his collaboration with fellow artist Young Stunna.

During the conversation, Flvme spoke candidly about the unexpected performance Stunna delivered on the track. “He actually shocked us,” Flvme said when reflecting on Stunna’s contribution. “I think he might have outrapped me too. He had a better performance than I did.”

Flvme elaborated on how the collaboration came to be, explaining that he had initially envisioned a different direction for the song. “He shocked us cause we thought he was gonna sing, that’s another reason why I sent him the jam in the first place,” he said. According to Flvme, the original plan was to feature vocals, not a rap verse.

The reason for the shift in musical approach came down to technical challenges. “And also the reason why he actually rapped was the same reason why I was rapping through out almost every song on the album — his vocals were fucked,” Flvme stated.

He provided further context by referencing both his and Stunna’s musical foundations. “He was fairly a rap nigga before and I also started off as a full-time rapper before I figured out that we can do more than just rapping,” Flvme said. The comment underlines how both artists transitioned from being traditional rappers to exploring broader musical expressions.

Although Stunna appeared on Habibi, Flvme clarified that this wasn’t initially the plan. He described the feature as a bucket list moment, but not specifically intended for that song. “I initially wanted to get Zakes on that song, but because I couldn’t sing on it, it pushed me to get Stunna on it,” he explained.

Flvme also spoke about his vision for a different type of collaboration with Stunna, saying, “I never wanted to get Stunna on a song like that. I wanted us to create something a little bit more different to that.” He emphasized that the synergy between the two artists holds greater potential beyond the current release. “I feel like we can create our own little world of music,” he added.

The interview provided listeners with rare behind-the-scenes details of how the track Habibi came together and offered a glimpse into the fluid, sometimes unpredictable nature of creative collaboration between artists.

Flvme’s statements reflected a practical look at both creative compromise and artistic evolution, as he continues to experiment with his sound and work with artists who challenge expectations, even his own.
