An awards from You Magazine AKA Huis Genoot. The bantus had no place in magazines that were targeting white folk so why in the world would an award be given to a Cassper Nyovest. Also remember Naspers was founded in 1915, by Afrikaans name Nasionale Pers (National Press) as publisher & printer of news papers and magazines. It was founded by J.B.M. Hertzog who also founded the National Party, the previous year in 1914. Naspers first published the Afrikaans language daily Die Burger in 1914 which was followed by its first magazine Die Huisgenoot in 1916.The point was to always push an Afrikaner agenda but post 94 o they've become one of the most progressive liberated media houses playing a huge part in empowering all types of South Africans.
These places were once associated with exile. When Nelson Mandela and the rest of the MK were in jail for treason people like OR Tambo were educating the world about the ANC's liberation struggle in the hopes to gain international support and drive sanctions. Look at us now we got AKA showing the world how much talent we have behind the mic and before you know it AKA will start the first international twitter beef with an artists in the UK. Now if you dont think we've come a long way from being politically underground to being globally mainstream than you whole perspective is wack.
We dont know how much Khuli Chana's deal was worth with KFC but we do know that right after the campaign he purchased a brand new Aston Martin. Im sure you know about people like Joe Mafela aka S'dumo and even Lucky Dube who were endorsing brands like Chicken Licken and ACE pap. Do you think they even got paid a fraction of what Khuli received. Its possible the brands could of paid it but back then in an industry like this black folk were merely the pawns and the white folks were the business. So next time you about to hate on any of the young cats that are doing well remember how many in our history have been put down by apartheid and then ask yourself if your actions are necessary. I mean is that really necessary huh?
Clothing line? Oh hell nah not in 1976. We still have a long way to go with retailers preferring to stock international garments but the concept alone would of been far fetched. Infact I think the first musical duo to have a clothing line was Marc-Alex. I'm not sure how much control they had over the business but I doubt they were spearheading it like some of the artists are today. Democracy has allowed us to fight for our dreams.
There was a time when all we were was talent. Today we can create our own events, be the talent, book the talent, book the venue and own the platforms that communicate the event and most importantly we can inteprete our history in our own way and not through a western researcher. So before you make excuses about how difficult it is to do anything remember how difficult it was. Shit there was no internet, email, cellphones or blogs like slikouronlife. If you make your own luck you'll realize how privileged we are.
Happy Youth Day Y'all
