South Africa is known for its landscapes and holiday destinations, one of which is The Cape Of Good Hope. True to his spirit of celebrating and commenting on his lived experience in Cape Town, YoungstaCPT has debuted the music video for his 3T track, "The Cape Of Good Hope."
Setting anything against Cape Town's picturesque landscapes would make for effortlessly beautiful visuals, and the same can be said for Youngsta's latest music video. However, instead of taking viewers to typical scenes from places like Camps Bay or Table Mountain, the rapper lets the lyrics of the song guide his visuals. Featuring scenes outside of Aneesa's, a popular fast food spot, Kalk Bay, where the postcard style colourful beach houses are, and more, the music video shows the average Cape Town resident's experience in the city.
When shoots take place in impoverished communities or featuring impoverished people, there is often a tendency for the visuals to come across as "poverty porn." This is more pronounced when the visuals are created by or feature individuals who have no relationship with the area. Thankfully, this is never the case with YoungstaCPT. Not only is Cape Town his home, but the hood is where he was raised. In "The Cape Of Good Hope," viewers see Youngsta adjacent to people whom many would poorly describe as vagabonds, without it ever coming across as "poverty porn."
Youngsta's latest visual offering was directed and shot by Dale Fortune and together, they've created a great visual guide of the Cape Town Youngsta knows and loves. Check it out below!
