Johannesburg has experienced rain for the past two days without the hope of it ending any time soon. This Thursday the city of gold expects a thunderstorm, and coupled with the occasional load-shedding power outages it’s safe to assume that many lovers will be indoors for Valentine’s Day. South Africa’s R&B scene is so close to its hip-hop scene that it can be hard to tell which genre to assign to any given musician. However, as times go on, we have seen artists purposefully refute belonging to one particular genre as to allow for their creativity to exist in a bigger realm than the single box of a genre. Artists like Kly, Nirvana Nokwe, Una Rams and many more are prime examples of what genre-bending between R&B, alternative, and hip-hop sounds like in South Africa.
