Onlifer's Review: @PatrickXXLee – Diary Of An Arsonist By @Freed_Davids

In their brokenness many people have written some of the greatest music in the world. The Zambian born rapper PatricKxxLee has added his name to the list with his rock solid eighteen record debut album Diary Of An Arsonist. PatricKxxLee’s album is the aftermath of his rebellious decision to quit school in pursuit of a music career.

Inferno Born and Escape From Hell provide a succinct account of how his parents reacted to his decision and how he reacted to theirs. “Daddy didn’t want no punk, mama didn’t want no punk, what a bad a son, paty boy had to run paty boy had to flunk/” he pours his heart out on Inferno Born. The rapper left home and burnt bridges between him and everyone who was not with the plan. “You want to control me but I am already something/ I am out of your reach, you hate yourself because you lost me/ Fv?K your apology you ain’t getting one from me/” By not supporting his dreams, Patrick’s parents facilitated the rebirth of a rebellious son, who would stop at nothing to realise his dream even if it meant doing it with no one in his corner.

The next two records, Hollow Man 2 and Good Girls Gone Mad, see the rapper trying to numb his pains resulting from relationships and general life obstacles with the use of alcohol.

“Some people say I feel too much, I don’t wanna feel, I rather be drunk”

“Married to the pain, my wedding ring got me love drunk/”
The use of alcohol to escape prevails throughout the tape on tracks like Heartbreak Hotel where he says, “pour me up some more don’t think I am drunk enough”; Die Alone with the words “party animal I drink until I am numb” and on Pocahontas where he admits, “So much liquor in my cup I think I might drown.”

On Heartbreak Hotel he comes out and raps about a girl who never appreciated his efforts despite how hard he tried, she just kept on lying saying - “I made you feel beautiful, you just did the usual/” I love he how delivers verse two, the energy level and emotional range are so accurate. You can tell that he was really hurt because of what was going on.

On Love Is Rage and SNST BLVD he opts for a melodic approach. On Love Is Rage, he sings for a good 02:23 seconds on a song that’s 04:32 long and on SNST BLVD he only spits four bars and then sings throughout the whole song. I am not complaining because his singing is very dope and rather contagious, even when you’re no longer listening to the songs the mollifying melodies keep ringing in your head.

Pocahontas was actually a great choice to release as a single. It has an immaculate and captivating chorus and hooks, which leaves you asking for more. I also love how the rapper exercises artistic freedom; he writes and delivers his verses in his own fashion.

On Conscious the rapper asks you to tap into the higher you, “And I am connected with my higher self, connected with my higher self/ in the physical you will never find yourself, you will never find yourself/ need a miracle? I create one, I’ve already been a God and a slave once, and I’ve seen both sides of the spectrum/” he needs you to know what you need to know.

“I can tell you what you need to know the rest you have figure out yourself”

“I can only help you, help yourself/” This is more like an alarm; Patrick wants you to wake up and realise the power that’s within you. "Moral of the story, you don’t know what you need to know/“ it seems that a lot of people don’t realise the power that’s vested in them and the rapper is trying to change that.

This is a great project, I love how it is so unique. It came out perfectly, maybe that’s the benefit of doing everything yourself. Paty boy did everything by himself on this project, from production to the raps with no features. I applaud him on the superb production and distinct auto-tune application; most people fail to use it well that it ends up annoying the listener. I believe that even if it was turned off he’d still sound dope. This was a much needed project; the kids need to know that it doesn’t matter what everybody thinks, you ought to do what you want to do they’ll get the picture later. Our parents also need to know that as much as they're trying to ensure that we have a better future, it means nothing to be financially secured if you are not where you want to be. Our wildest dreams should be supported. I’m glad they’ve let Paty boy into the country, he came with the gospel that many need to hear.
