Inside @DJMilkshake 22 Hour Walk For Rustenburg Learners #ShakeShifters

By @Spokenpriestess on 06/14/2017 in

DJ Milkshake is walking 120 kilometers from Diepkloof, Soweto to Tlhabane, Rustenburg in the aim to raise awareness and funds for rural learners in his hometown (Rusty). It will take him 22 hours nonstop to complete this walk and he, as well as his brother - Amo Mabelane, are already enroute and have walked down about 60 kilometers right now.

To put things into perspective, according to Statistics South Africa's General Household Survey 2002 – 2014, 71% of South Africa's learners walk to school, while 8% use public transport. Only 2% report using school buses or transport provided by the government. The vast majority (83%) of white children are driven to school in private cars, compared with only 12% of African children. These figures show big disparity in child mobility and means of access to school.

Here's what he said about his decision to do this under his DJ Milkshake Foundation and why he's walking on these particular two days:

"Education has always had a special place in my heart as well as my parents. They have always been advocates for access to good quality education especially for the rural child and many children walk barefoot for hours to get to school. The date of the 14th of June is symbolic to me as my mom passed away on this day in 2011 and I will be doing this walk to honour her memory."

Listen to our conversation with him when he was at Magalies earlier today:

The DJ Milkshake Foundation calls on individuals, corporates and fans to get involved with this cause by making contributions which can be either monetary or non-monetary and the proceeds will be donated to various schools and if you don’t want to walk 120 KM you can sponsor someone per KM to walk on your behalf.
