Multiple award winning hip hop artist, Gigi Lamayne, is making waves both musically and academically. She recently released her new single ‘Shisa’ which is available for both download and streaming and upon its release, the hit new single dominated social media platforms and gained exceptional digital presence and momentum.
To add to the young female musician’s success, Gigi Lamayne real name Genesis Manney will be graduating on the 30th March 2016 from Wits University after completing her undergraduate studies in Media and Anthropology with four distinctions. Lamayne will not only be walking away with her degree but she will also be awarded a Media Monitoring Africa Prize for Top Third-Year student in Media Studies by the Wits Faculty of Humanities.
“I’m really excited to be one of the few musicians with a degree and I hope that this motivates other young and upcoming musicians to take both their craft and education seriously,” Lamayne said. As a follow up to her graduation, Lamayne feels that it is within her right to address the recent #FeesMustFall debacle that has swept throughout the country’s university campuses over the past few months with a new single titled ‘Fees Will Fall’. The song will be available for download and streaming on Lamayne’s graduation day, 30th March 2016.
“I feel like the hip hop genre should be a medium for addressing social issues that continue affecting the youth on a daily basis. As a rapper I need to constantly address relevant subject matters. #FeesMustFall protests will forever be remembered as one of the turning points of the South African education system and this song serves to remind everyone about the effects it had on me personally and everyone who was involved. It is not an attack of any kind to anyone but merely a reflection of what was,” Lamayne concluded.
