For All The Ballers: Basketball Players to Clash on Constitution Hill Court

This Saturday 32 participants will hit the basketball court at Constitution Hill and face-off one-on-one for the Red Bull King of the Rock title.

Johannesburg (South Africa) – For the first time ever, international one-on-one basketball competition Red Bull King of the Rock heads to Constitution Hill’s Section 4 on Saturday, 27 June 2015. 32 basketballers will compete one-on-one to see who comes out on top and heads to the world final in Turkey later this year.

The one-on-one basketball competition was first staged in 2010 on San Francisco’s infamous Alcatraz Island and since then has expanded to 21 countries participating in 2015.

The chosen location for the South African final, Section 4, is not without it’s own historic past: It was built in 1902 specifically for Black Male Prisoners. Mahatma Ghandi, Robert Sobukwe and Oliver Tambo were held there, as were students of the 1976 uprising who are commemorated by Youth Day celebrated every June 16th.

The action starts at 12pm where the 32 participants will face a round-robin knockout. Once the field has been narrowed down to 8 (established by the highest accumulation of points through the knockout round) they’ll head straight into the semi-finals and then finals to see who is reigns over the court.

Former South African Basketball player and Sportive Director for Red Bull King of the Rock, Ongkopotse ‘KP’ Ndlovu says: “One-on-one is a very rare form of competition. It's great for the development of South African basketball as the younger generation haven’t really been exposed to competitions of this level.”

“This is something that can grow! This format is a lot more visual which lends itself to be more appealing to young eyes and minds - which in turn will assist in the development of the game as more kids are gonna wanna be cool and play basketball to participate in Red Bull King of the Rock.”

Siyabonga Ngwekazi aka Scoop Makathini will host the day’s activities as the event MC.
